We believe that the health and safety of children is of paramount importance. We make our preschool a safe and healthy place for children, parents and volunteers.
We aim to make children, parents and staff aware of health and safety issues and to minimise the hazards and risks to enable the children to thrive in a healthy and safe environment.
The member of staff responsible for health and safety is Fiona Welsh.
She is competent to carry out these responsibilities. She has undertaken health and safety training and regularly updates her knowledge and understanding. We display the necessary health and safety poster in Pre-school Hallway.

Our risk assessment process includes:
Checking for hazards and risks indoors and outdoors, in our activities and procedures, our equipment and materials.
Deciding which areas need attention.
Developing an action plan specifying the action required, the timescales for action, the person responsible for the action and any funding required.

At least one member of staff with current first aid training is on the premises or on an outing at any one time. The first aid qualification includes first aid training for infants and young children.
All staff undertake Paediatric First Aid Training every 3 years.
Our first aid kit complies with Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981; they are regularly checked by a designated member of staff and re-stocked as necessary.
They are easily accessible to adults, and kept out of reach of children.

All children should refrain from attending pre-school if suffering from infectious or contagious illness. Scarlet fever, measles, rubella, whooping cough, chicken pox, mumps etc. parents will be informed of any possible exposure to infectious diseases. Food poisoning note to return within 14 days, notify OFSTED and HPU. Please speak to staff to confirm isolation period to stay at home when Ill. Sickness and Diarrhea has a 48 hour hour isolation from the last episode.
Administering staff to give medicine to a child must complete and sign the required Parents form. All medicines must be kept in a locked cupboard.
We have medication forms for Prescribed and Non Prescribed medication, this is given at the manager discresion and the child must be well enough to attend Pre-School.
In the event of an emergency while child is at pre-school, parents will be informed by telephone and arrangements made for child to be collected.

If no contact can be made, the child will rest in a quiet area by staff supervision

If a sudden emergency should arise the child must be taken to hospital or to a doctor’s surgery as soon as possible.
Parents/carer:

The virus is carried in infected bodily fluids and is usually transmitted by sexual intercourse with an infected person, the virus is not spread by normal social contact, coughing, sneezing, sharing washing and drinking facilities and toilets.
A child with aids does not pose a threat to other children but may be at risk from them, as such a child has no defence against ordinary childhood infections and may be too ill to attend the group.
It is important to ensure:
That cuts or open wounds are covered with a plaster or dressing, particularly if there is contact with other people’s blood or bodily fluids.
Staff are using gloves if blood, vomit or excrement are wiped up thoroughly using disposable materials which can be flushed away. Floors and other affected surfaces should be cleaned using bleach diluted according to manufacturer’s instructions.
Toothbrushes are not shared.

Toys are Deep cleaned at the end of every half term. Staff are to be aware of broken toys and they will be thrown out immediately. Age appropriate toys are always chosen. No toys that are without safety marks in the pre-school. Toys and equipment are regularly cleaned and disinfected.
At snack time a cup of milk and a small bowl of fruit or cereal, toast, rice cakes etc will be provided for each child. We hope to promote healthy eating. There are napkins and wipes provided for children to use. Helping them to learn about food hygiene.

We prefer children to be toilet trained, but if they are still not dry we will help them by using lots of praise and encouragement. Staff can change nappies, but we would prefer pull ups to help encourage the children to use the potty.

Systems are in place for the safe arrival and departure of children. The times of the children's arrival and departure are recorded. The arrival of adults - volunteers and visitors - are recorded. our systems prevent unauthorised access to our premises. Our systems prevent children from leaving our premises unnoticed. The personal possessions of staff and volunteers are securely stored during sessions.
